What Is TAVI / TAVR?
TAVI/TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation/Replacement) places a new aortic heart valve through a catheter, usually from the groin, without open-heart surgery. The new valve is mounted on a stent and expanded inside the old, narrowed valve.
Why Is TAVI / TAVR Done? — Indications
It is done to treat severe narrowing of the aortic valve (aortic stenosis), which blocks blood flow out of the heart.
Who May Need TAVI / TAVR?
It is especially for patients with severe aortic stenosis who are elderly or high-risk and not suitable for open surgery.
Types / Variations of TAVI / TAVR
Transfemoral TAVI
The most common route — the valve is passed through an artery in the groin.
Alternative-access TAVI
If the leg arteries are too narrow, other routes (such as near the collarbone or through a small chest opening) may be used.
Balloon-expandable or self-expanding valve
Two main valve designs — the heart team chooses the one that fits your anatomy best.
Valve-in-valve TAVI
A new valve placed inside a previously implanted surgical valve that has worn out.
Your cardiologist will tell you which type or technique is right for you after reviewing your reports.
Benefits of TAVI / TAVR
It is a life-saving valve replacement without open-heart surgery, ideal for elderly or high-risk patients, with quick recovery.
How TAVI / TAVR Is Performed
Through a small puncture in the groin (or chest), the new valve is guided to the heart and expanded in place. In most cases there is no large chest cut and no heart-lung machine.
Preparation Before TAVI / TAVR
It needs detailed assessment with echo, CT scan and angiography, and careful planning by a “heart team.”
Tests Required Before TAVI / TAVR
- 2D Echo — to check pumping (EF) and the valves
- CT scan of the heart and blood vessels — to measure the valve and check the access route
- Coronary angiography — the images used to plan the procedure
- Blood tests — haemoglobin, kidney function (creatinine), blood sugar and clotting profile
- ECG — to record the heart's rhythm on the day
- Infection screening (HIV, hepatitis B and C) as per hospital protocol
- Dental check-up and lung assessment, if advised
Your doctor will tell you exactly which tests you need — bring all previous reports, CDs and your medicine list.
Anaesthesia / Sedation Used in TAVI / TAVR
Most often local anaesthesia with sedation, so you are relaxed and comfortable. Some patients need general anaesthesia — the heart team decides this in advance.
How Long Does TAVI / TAVR Take?
The procedure usually takes about 1–2 hours.
Hospital Stay / Admission for TAVI / TAVR
Often just a few days (about 2–5 days), depending on age, overall health and recovery.
Risks & Possible Complications of TAVI / TAVR
Risks include bleeding, blood-vessel injury, rhythm problems that may need a pacemaker, and stroke — all managed by an expert heart team.
Recovery After TAVI / TAVR
Recovery is shorter than open surgery — often just a few days in hospital and a faster return to normal life.
Aftercare & Precautions After TAVI / TAVR
- Take every medicine exactly as prescribed — never stop blood thinners on your own.
- Keep the puncture site clean and dry for 2–3 days; a little bruising is normal.
- Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous work for the first few days, as advised.
- Tell your dentist about your heart procedure — antibiotics may be needed before dental work, as your doctor advises.
- A repeat echo is done at follow-up to check how the valve or device is working.
- Increase walking gradually and join cardiac rehabilitation if advised.
- Keep every follow-up visit and bring your discharge summary and reports.
Success / Expected Outcomes of TAVI / TAVR
Most patients notice clearly easier breathing and more energy within weeks. TAVI improves quality of life and survival in severe aortic stenosis, especially in elderly and high-risk patients.
When to Seek Medical Help After TAVI / TAVR
Contact us immediately — or go to the nearest emergency — if you notice any of these after going home:
